  • #Anti-trans

Gina Carano, known for her role as Cara Dune on “The Mandalorian,” first attracted negative attention in September 2020 when she edited her Twitter bio to include pronouns that were seen to be inappropriate and mocking of trans and non-binary people.

Later that year, she began posting controversial tweets promoting membership on the app Parler (popular with right-wing pundits), repeating accusations of voter fraud in the 2020 presidential election, and condemning mask-wearers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In February 2021, Carano posted several Instagram stories once again mocking mask-wearers in California, as well as comparing America's political divide to Nazi Germany. After #FireGinaCarano trended on Twitter for the second time, Gina Carano was fired from “The Mandalorian,” Hasbro discontinued her action figures, and she was dropped by United Talent Agency.

In September of 2020, Carano was asked by her Twitter followers to add her pronouns to her handle. Those in the trans and non-binary community do this so others can avoid misgendering them, and cisgender individuals often participate as a sign of solidarity.

In a Twitter post dated September 12, 2020, which has since been deleted, Carano discusses a conversation with fellow “Mandalorian” actor Pedro Pascal, whose sister Lux is a trans woman:

“Yes, Pedro & I spoke & he helped me understand why people were putting them in their bios.  I didn’t know before but I do now. I won’t be putting them in my bio but good for all you who choose to. I stand against bullying, especially the most vulnerable & freedom to choose. 💯”

Deleted tweet from Gina Carano, text reads: "Yes, Pedro & I spoke & he helped me understand why people were putting them in their bios. I didn't know before but I do now. I won't be putting them in my bio but good for all you who choose to. I stand against bullying, especially the most vulnerable & freedom to choose. 100"

But despite stating she would not be participating, she later updated her profile to include “boop/bop/beep.”

Her update incited backlash from Twitter users when her words were interpreted as mocking and anti-trans. While those three words could be interpreted as a reference to the droids from “Star Wars,” as Carano later pointed to, users on Twitter responded negatively.

Immediately following the negative response from Twitter users, Carano attempted to explain her motivation behind her “pronoun” choices, tweeting that “Beep/bop/boop has zero to do with mocking trans people” and that it was about “exposing the bullying mentality of the mob that has taken over the voices of many genuine causes.”

Following the backlash caused by Carano’s “pronoun” posting, talk show host Joe Pags Pagliarulo asked Carano to expand on the situation, and one Twitter user asked Carano, “can you see how some would read that as … mocking?”

Carano sought to defend her actions on Twitter, responding:

“After months of harassing me in every way. I decided to put 3 VERY controversial words in my bio.. beep/bop/boop I’m not against trans lives at all. They need to find less abusive representation,” and “I don’t think trans people would like all of you trying to force a woman to put something in her bio through harassment & name calling EVERYDAY for MONTHS. Such as “Racist” Transphobe” “Bitch” “Weirdo” “I hope you die” “I hope you lose your career” “your fat, you’re ugly.””

She also stated, in a tweet that has since been deleted, “I know trans people wouldn’t condone this harassment when they hear about the CHiLDREN, women & men who have contacted me, thanking me for taking a stand against these bullies because it effected their mental health to the point of near suicide at times. Ya. That’s happening.”

Ya. That's happening."

Many Twitter users responded to Carano’s defense, disagreeing with Carano’s words and actions.

On February 2, 2021, Carano shared multiple posts on her Instagram Stories. One Story compared America's political divide to Nazi Germany.

Carano said, “Jews were beaten in the streets, not by Nazi soldiers but by their neighbors...even by children. 😞”  Her post continued, “Because history is edited, most people today don’t realise that to get to the point where Nazi soldiers could easily round up thousands of Jews, the government first made their own neighbors hate them simply for being Jews. How is that any different from hating someone for their political views?”

Carano shared another Story that showed a picture of a man wearing multiple masks with the caption, "Meanwhile in California."

She removed both posts by the following afternoon, but not before screenshots had been shared across social media platforms.

“If you’re not caught up on this story, Gina Carano mocked people’s preferred pronouns, mocked safety measures during a pandemic, and compared being criticized to the holocaust.  She made the choice to say these things. Lucasfilm made the choice not to work with her anymore.”

On February 12, 2021, only two days after Lucasfilm reported Gina Carano's departure from “The Mandalorian,” The Daily Wire co-founder Ben Shapiro announced a partnership with Carano to produce and star in an upcoming film.

Carano posted on Instagram: "I’d like to thank you all from the deepest part of my heart for the love I’ve received over the past 24 hours." She continued, "I would not be here without your support. Thank you to @realdailywire @officialbenshapiro for helping make one of my dreams — to develop and produce my own film — come true. I cried out and my prayer was answered."  She ended her post with, “They can’t cancel us if we don’t let them. ❤️Stick together. I stand with you.”
